Possible D-Coordinator Replacements for Giants

Well, now that Romeo Crennel has officially signed with the Chiefs and Jim Haslett has signed with the Redskins, the Giants must turn to other possible options. Ideally, Coughlin & Co. would like a Coordinator that runs a 4-3 scheme similar to that which the team has been running. Perry Fewell, who became more well known when he took over for Dick Jauron as interim Head Coach of the Buffalo Bills earlier this season, could be an interesting choice. However, he is close with Chicago head coach Lovie Smith and is linked to the Bears as well. The decision from Fewell will either be the Giants or the Bears, and I'm guessing he chooses Chicago.

If this happens, a whole new wave of candidates comes in:

ex-Giants Pepper Johnson, who has worked under Bill Belichick for the past decade, could be an interesting hire.

Current Washington Redskins LB coach Kirk Olivadotti is also a name that could pop up. Only 36, his father, Tom, was a Giants assistant. Many people are speculating that Shanahan & Haslett will bring their own staff with them, thus leaving Olivadotti.

According to the National Football Post, Jets LB coach Bob Sutton is the top choice for Coughlin. The leader of one of the top defensive units in the league, I would not mind seeing Sutton calling signals from the sidelines for the Gmen next season.

Dom Capers - current Packers DC, who interviewed for the Giants job in 2007 (which ultimately went to Steve Spagnuolo), could be pried away from Green Bay. With the horrendous defensive display against the Cardinals this past Sunday, it's almost impossible to imagine that Capers completely overhauled the Packers D, and turned it into a top D in the league.

And the candidate I would like to see get the job? Dick Jauron, ex-Bills head coach. Jauron, who was Coughlin's DC in Jacksonville and also was a DC in Detroit, is more than capable of running Coughlin's D. Despite his lack of success in the AFC East with the Bills, I think Jauron knows what kind of smashmouth D it takes to win in the NFC Beast.
